and forlorn. Ramrod-stiff stems, garish colours,
and showy blooms of farm-grown imports hold
little interest for her.
Today’s chosen shapes are thorny briars, which
are just beginning to poke out of recently trimmed
hedgerows. Joanna has harvested a handful to
create a new display around their sculptural, wiry
stems. “I begin with a framework for structure,
then add textural stems for interest and something
from my garden for substance. I make sure the
colours all work together, but go on instinct rather
than any set rules,” she explains.
For Joanna, Dartmoor is the perfect playground
to experiment with these skills. “I love it here
because it still feels as if nature has the upper
hand. The skies are so vast, and there are so few
distractions, it gives me space to breathe and think
in a way that I find impossible anywhere else.”
